الكاهن الصغير لا يعلم كيف ولا من أين جاء إلى هذا الوجود الذي يُختزل في أوقات الصلوات ليكون بين خشبات أربع، ثم يمتد نهاراً حتى يلتهم الأفق بصره، فيعود بحسرة متقدة بالأسئلة التي ما تلبث أن تنطفئ بمياه النهر الذي أصبح اسمه مرادفاً للأسئلة المتدفقة عبر المياه الجارية بصوت متتابع رتيب يزيد المكان وحشة.
"اذهب واغتسل".
هكذا كان يأمره ليكفر عن خطاياه كلما نزل من الجبل الذي كان ملاذه للتأمل والبحث عن أجوبة في الأفق الذي لا ينقطع.
"هل هناك أحد غيرنا، أنا وأنت؟".
"هل وُلدتُ كما تولد الحيوانات؟".
"إذا كان للحيوان أم وأب، فلماذا ليس لي مثلهما؟".
"لقد أدركت أن صغير الحيوان لا يسير إلا برفقة أمه أو أبيه، فإن لم تكن أنت أحدهما، فمن أنت؟".
"ما الذي يحدث بعد الفناء؟".
"لماذا لا تستطيع هذه الجبال الحديث إلينا؟".
"من الآخرون الذين نذكرهم في صلواتنا؟".
"من أين جاءت هذه الطيور؟".
"إلى أين تهاجر؟".
"ما الزمن الذي يدفعنا نحو الفناء؟".
"هل الزمن هو هذا النهر؟".
