هذه قراءة في أخبار معاوية بن أبي سفيان "ت 60هـ" رضي الله عنه، وهي قراءة لا علاقة لها بالتاريخ الذي هو ماذا حدث وأين ومتى ولماذا؛ إنما هي في النص التاريخي الذي هو لغة وبناء حكاية ورؤية مؤرخ وثقافة عصر، هي في النص التاريخي حين يصير أدباً يمضي بالقارئ من يقينية الثبوت المعلوماتي إلى جماليات التعبير وشعرية السرد وحبكة البناء ، من جمود الإطار إلى مرونة السياق، من الخبر إلى الحكاية، ومن الحقيقي إلى التخييلي، من معاوية الزمان والمكان إلى معاوية الأسطورة، إن الإسطورية هي "خروج العقلية البشرية عن الواقع والمنطق وخضوع هذا الواقع للخيال المفسر لما في الطبيعة والكون والحياة من مظاهر وأحداث، تفسيراً بعيداً عن منطق العقلية التي تقوم بهذا التفسير، ففي هذه الدراسة نتلمس الطريق إلى الممتع الجميل، كيف صار (معاوية) أدباً، وكيف تحول الخبر إلى (حكاية)، وأي شيئ يمكن ان يكون مفتاح هذه الشخصية العظيمة والمدهشة والمثيرة لوجهات نظر كثيرة.. وسنبدأ بمدخل عن بدايات (معاوية) ونهايته، مجموعة من الأخبار نضعها متدرجة لتقدم لنا (البدء والختام)، أما الفصول فكانت كالتالي: (الفصل الأول: السياق والرجل، الفصل الثاني: الاستدراج والحجاج، الفصل الثالث: بنية الاستدراج بين لغة الرسائل وبلاغة الحجاج، الفصل الرابع: رسائل معاوية إلى علي وابنه الحسن، الفصل الخامس: الأسد والأسطورة).
