تهدف هذه الدراسة إلى الوقوف على رصد وتحليل أهم التحولات في النظرية الديمقراطية وطبيعة التوجهات المعاصرة، وتكمن أهمية موضوع الدراسة في أن الديمقراطية أصبحت نظرية عالمية مطروحة في إطار النظم السياسية على اختلافها، وخاصة منذ تسعينيات القرن العشرين مع موجة التحول نحو الديمقراطية التي سادت الكثير من دول العالم، ونظراً للتعدد الهائل في الكتابات والاتجاهات والموضوعات التي تدرج في إطار النظرية الديمقراطية المعاصرة، فقد قامت الدراسة بتبني إطاراً تحليلياً يقوم على تصنيف الاتجاهات المعاصرة في النظرية الديمقراطية في إطار ثلاث اتجاهات رئيسة: الاتجاه الأول، يركز على مفهوم الديمقراطية وأنماطها، وهو اهتمام قديم وحديث لكتاب النظرية الديمقراطية، والاتجاه الثاني يهتم بدراسة عملية التحول الديمقراطي، والاتجاه الثالث يتناول علاقة النظرية الديمقراطية بالعولمة.
