يتضمن الكتاب قضية هامة يكثر الجدل حولها بين المؤرخين والمستشرقين وهي صورة مصر في اعين الأوربيين في نهاية القرن الثامن عشر.. مصر في ذلك الحين كانت أسطورة تقع في نهاية العالم، ومن يذهب إليها كان يحي العجائب التي رآها حتى أن الأوربيين ظنوا أن مصريي ذلك الحين لا يختلفون عن الهنود الحمر، عندما اكتشفهم كريستوفر كولومبس، وكان هذا شعور من اشترك في الحملة الفرنسية مع نابليون بونابرت، واسم مصر كان مرتبطاً بهزيمة الملك لويس التاسع أثناء الحروب الصليبية في القرن الثالث عشر. وهذا جعل من يفكر فيها يفكر أيضاً في الانتقام لهذه الهزيمة، والكتاب يتناول وبإيجاز شديد السنوات الثلاث التي قضتها الحملة الفرنسية في مصر.. ويوضح لنا كيف رحل نابليون بسرعة مذهلة من مصر، حيث لم يمكث في مصر إلا أربعة عشر شهراً ثم سافر مينو مع من تبقى من الجيش في 1801 وفشلت الحملة في كل أهدافها، وتطرح الكاتبة تساؤلاً هاماً وهو من أين جاءت هذه الأهمية القصوى التي تجعل حملة نابليون بونابرت تأخذ هذا النصيب من الاهتمام وسط تاريخ يمتد لأكثر من عشرة آلاف عام؟!
وفي الجزء الثاني (الحملة الفرنسية في محكمة التاريخ) نقرأ الحقائق البشعة لجيش الاحتلال في مصر بقلم شهود الحملة العيان، تلك الحقائق التي طمسها كل من رأى نابليون بونابرت عبقرياً معصوماً من الخطأ، كما سبق أن تجاهلها المؤرخون الاستعماريون بسبب عنصرية واضحة في كتاباتهم، أدت إلى إطلاق اسم "الحملة الحضارية" على حملة، اعترفوا - في الوقت نفسه - أنها كانت استعمارية، وأهم ما يقدمه هذا الجزء للقارئ، خطابات كليبر، حاكم مصر، بعد رجيل بونابرت، التي يقول فيها صراحة ما ينكره كل من مجد الجيش الفرنسي، قبل أن ينتهي عصر الامبراطوريات الاستعمارية، لذا فإن هذا الكتاب يناقش بعد ذلك، مفهوم الموضوعية العلمية في الغرب، وما يدعيه الغرب من صدق واحترام للحقيقة، يفنده موقفهم من الحملة على مصر، إذ يصرون حتى الآن على اعتبارها حملة تنويرية، مع اعترافهم بهدفها الاستعماري، وبالفظائع التي اقترفتها جند الحملة في السنوات الثلاث
