تحجرت الكلمات في فمي... لوحت بيدي من الفتحة... كان هناك حوش يفصلني عنهم، ولم يلتفت إلي أحد... أصبت باليأس... سيأتي الظلام، وأنا جالس بين عظام الموتى وجماجمهم، والكلاب والقطط تحيط بي، يقولون إن المدافن يسكنها الجن وأشباح الموتى وأرواحهم، سأقضي ليلتي بينهم، أحسست بأنني غريق في بحرهائج تحاصره العواصف والأمواج من كل جانب... أحاول العثور على لوح خشبي طاف أتعلق به، أو تمر سفينة تنقذني... سمعت أحد المقرئين يتلو آيات من القرآن الكريم... بعد أن انتهى من تلاوته تسربت الجموع فرادى ومجموعات، وظل البعض يدعو للميت بالمغفرة والجنة والراحة في نومته... رأيت رجلاً قصيراً نحيفاً يلبس جلباباً مخططاً طويلاً... بلعت ريقي واستجمعت قواي، وصرخت بأعلى صوتي... توقف والتفت حوله منصتاً، واصلت النداء سأل مين بيصرخ؟ أنا فوزي . فوزي مين؟... فوزي مات... وأنا دفنته بإيدي الظهر... إنت عفريته ولا واحد استخبا في المدفن وجه يعمل عمله. صرخت: أنا فوزي محروس الحلواني. اقترب مني، وحدق في واستدار وتركني عائداً. اجتاحني الخوف والشك... ثبت عيني على الممر وانصت.... بعد قليل سمعت خطوات تقترب، وصوت ولوج مفتاح في باب المقبرة، وصرير بابها وهو يفتح... دخل الحوش وجثا على ركبتيه وأكمل فتح الكوة، وأمسك بيدي وجذبني.
