أبو العلا عفيفي: عالم وفيلسوف ومُتصوف مصري كبير، تخصَّص في التصوف الإسلامي، وله إسهام بحثي كبير في الفلسفة الإسلامية.
وُلد «أبو العلا عفيفي» بالجيزة عام ١٨٩٧م، وتخرَّج في دار العلوم عام ١٩٢١م وكان ترتيبه الأول؛ مما أهَّله للحصول على منحة دراسية بإنجلترا لدراسة التربية وعلم النفس عام ١٩٢٤م، ثم درس الفلسفة بجامعة كامبريدج، وحصل على درجة البكالوريوس منها عام ١٩٢٧م، ثم الدكتوراه عام ١٩٣٠م.
وبجانب ذلك كان «أبو العلا عفيفي» مُدرسًا مساعدًا لأستاذه المستشرق الإنجليزي المشهور «نيكلسون» بقسم الدراسات الشرقية بجامعة كامبريدج.
عاد «أبو العلا عفيفي» إلى مصر عام ١٩٣٠م، وعُيِّن مُدرسًا للفلسفة بكلية الآداب بالجامعة المصرية (جامعة القاهرة) بجوار مجموعة من أكبر أساتذة الفلسفة الفرنسيين وقتَها مثل «ألكسندر كواريه» و«إميل برييه»؛ والمصريين مثل «مصطفى عبد الرازق» و«منصور فهمي»، وترقَّى حتى أصبح رئيسًا لقسم الفلسفة بالجامعة، وفي أثناء تلك الفترة انتُدب لتدريس الفلسفة بجامعة الإسكندرية، وانتُدب أيضًا لتدريس الفلسفة الإسلامية بجامعة لندن وكلية هاملتون بأمريكا، كما عُيِّن عضوًا في المجلس الأعلى لرعاية الفنون والآداب والعلوم الاجتماعية، ومقرِّرًا للجنة الفلسفة فيه.
كان «أبو العلا عفيفي» ذا إنتاج كبير يتنوع بين المؤلَّفات والمترجَمات، بالإضافة إلى مجموعة كبيرة من الأبحاث العلمية المنشورة بالمجلات المتخصصة، من أهمها تحقيقُه لكتاب «فصوص الحكم» ﻟ «ابن عربي» (وهو رسالته للدكتوراه)، و«التصوف: الثورة الروحية في الإسلام»، و«الملامتية والصوفية وأهل الفتوة»، و«الناحية الصوفية في فلسفة ابن سينا». أما ترجماته فأهمها كتاب «مجمل المعرفة الحديثة» تأليف «أ. وولف»، وكتاب جمَع فيه مقالات أستاذه «نيكلسون» تحت عنوان «فن التصوف الإسلامي وتاريخه».
تُوفِّي «أبو العلا عفيفي» بالإسكندرية عام ١٩٦٦م.
