بعد المقدمة عن ظاهرة الضحك لدى الإنسان وفي الأدب العربي وفي علم الاجتماع وفي أوساط دمشق، ضم الكتاب عشر حكايات لطيفة تصور أجواء دمشق وما حولها من عشر حكايات لطيفة تصور أجواء دمشق وما حولها من الطرف التي كانت متداولة على ألسنة الناس، يتحدثون بها في سهراتهم، ويذكرون بالخير الرجال الظرفاء الذين رووها.
في الحكايا قصة رجل تائب لم يستطع التخلص من ماضيه، وزوج متعب بين ضرتين، وعريس أدب عروسه حتى العظم، وسوء تفاهم مضحك يقع لدى جهلة. ومأدبة لا ينال منها المدعوون إلا بعد عناء شديد.. وأشياء أخرى.
في الحياة أشخاص اشتهروا بالظرف يحبهم الناس لأن الحياة تحلو بهم وبقصصهم هم بين الناس، يعيشون مثلهم.. يشقون مثلهم، يحزنون ويتألمون مثلهم.. ولكنهم يرون ما لا يرى الآخرون، ويفسفون الحياة بفلسفة خاصة.. هي أنها بحاجة إلى وقفة لطيفة تخفف من غلوائها.
تسكب عليها شيئاً من عسل مخلوط بالمرارة ونضحك أحياناً ضحكاً مؤلماً أو ضحك تعجب، أو ضحك إعجاب، ومن القلب.. اضحك مع ظرفاء دمشق.
