نظر إليه وحياه ومد له الحكيم يده بالسلام فوضع يده في تلك اليد الملساء الناعمة وعرف أنه ليس بعامل أو أجير بل من علية القوم، ونطق بمخارج حروف عربية أصيلة يقدم نفسه: "توفيق الحكيم". لعل ما جعله يقدم نفسه للكاتب بهذه الطريقة هو ما يجمع بينهما من ملامح الوجه الشرقي المصري المشبع بماء النيل المؤطر بابتسامة الرضا والبشاشة... وقدم الكاتب نفسه له بنبرة من لم يكن قط يتوقع أن يقابل توفيق الحكيم في قلب باريس في مثل هذه اللحظة وقال ويداهما ما زالتا في عناق: "عاطف يوسف". وابتسم ابتسامته المعهودة وقال في ثقة: ملامحك ولهجتك تدلان على مصريتك، نعم... نعم سيدي، أنا من مصر. من أي البلاد فيها؟ -من الأسكندرية. فقال الحكيم مبتسماً وقد ازدادت ابتسامته إشراقاً: -وأنا كذلك.
