يعبر كيركجور عن مفهوم الحب على لسان القاضي "فلهلم" الذي يمثل وجهة النظر الأخلاقية، ويعتبر الزواج النموذج الأمثل للحياة الأخلاقية، والحب والزواج دائم وأبدى، بل إنه يتحول إلى واجب أخلاقي، ويلزم أن يبقى شريكاً مخلصاً للآخر حتى عندما تنقضي لحظة المتعة الحسية المباشرة.
كما أن استمرار الزواج دون حب هو ضرب من الخيانة في نظر كيركجور، وأن يشنق المرء أفضل من أن يتزوج زواجاً تعيساً، ويتساءل هل الحب يسبق الزواج أم أن الزواج هو الذي يسبق الحب؟، يتعرض كيركجور لتجربة حبه الفاشل والتضحية التي قام بها تلبية للنداء الديني عندما ضحى بريجينا أولسن، تماماً كما ضحى إبراهيم بولده طاعة للأمر الإلهي، ويتساءل كيركجور في النهاية هل يوجد شئ أسمى من الحب في حياة أي امرأة إن لم يكن يشغل كل حياتها؟ فالحب هو كل شئ بالنسبة للمرأة، كما يزداد جمال المرأة على مر السنين، ليس لدى الرب سوى شغف واحد: أن يحب وأن يكون محبوباً.
