من الأسباب التي دعت "خليل سليمان" إلى تأليف هذا الكتاب "يوسف في القرآن والتوراة" هو إثبات هيمنة القرآن على التوراة بالحجج البالغات والدلائل البينات. ويقصد بالتوراة هنا ما هو اليوم بأيدي اليهود من هذه الأسفار ذات الأخبار التي تزعم يهود أنها التوراة التي جاء بها موسى عليه السلام. فكلاً من القرآن وما عند اليهود يأتي من بعض نبأ الأنبياء بأمور هي في عمومها متشابهات فإذا تمعن فيها من يتمعن وجد بين النبأين فروقاً كثيرة. فإن كان ذلك المتمعن من المستشرقين، فإنه سيكتم الحق ويعلل كل تعليل. أما إن كان من أهل التعقل والإنصاف، والشهادة بالحق والاعتراف، فإنه سيرى فيما عند اليهود اليوم من التوراة أخبار ذات تلفيق... وسيرى في آيات القرآن الحق الحقيق... فهذا هو إذاً السبب الأساسي في إخراج هذا الكتاب للناس.
أما السبب الذي دعاه إلى هذا التأليف، هو انه وجد أكثر أناس هذا الزمان في ضل وخذلان، ذلك بما غفلوا عن القرآن واتبعوا جماعة المستشرقين من الفرنسيين والانكليز والأمريكان الذين لا همّ لهم إلا تشكيك الناس بالإيمان، وبالإضافة إلى تبيانه الفروقات بين القرآن والتوراة المفتراة، ركز على إظهار توافق آيات القرآن بعضها مع بعض، وكيف انها مترابطة ومتوافقة اتفاقاً عجيباً معجزاً تنقاد له العقول. وطريقته في التأليف كانت أن يأتي بالنصوص من كلام الكتابين القرآن العظيم... وتوراة اليهود... ثم يعمد إلى المقارنة بين كل نص وبين ما يشبهه في كل موضع من الأنباء في كلا الكتابين. ومن ثم ينتقل إلى تبيان موضع الخلاف الذي يخفى على غير المتمعن بياناً يعلم فيه المسلم تحريف اليهود ويعلم فيه الكافر غلبة النص القرآني على النص اليهودي في كل موضع غلاب يكون.
