يمثل زوج "اللفظ"/"المعنى" زوجاً إشكالياً في التراث على نحو عام، واللغوي والبلاغي والنقدي، على وجه الخصوص. ويرجع هذا الطابع المشكل إلى مجموعة من الأسباب والعوامل المقترنة بكيفية استخدام طرفي هذا الزوج وتعدد المجالات المعرفية التي استخدم فيها. بمعنى أن كثرة تداول هذا الزوج لم تتح له أن يصبح زوجاً (اصطلاحياً-مفهومياً)؛ بحيث يغدو كل طرف من طرفيه دالاً على تصور محدد، وظاهرة أو ظواهر بعينها، أو يغدو حضور أيّ من الطرفين محيلاً على الآخرة ضرورة، ومتضمناً حضوره كذلك، ودالاً على تصور لازم لعلاقته بالآخر أو أن يكن حضور هذا الزوج بطرفيه مقترناً بتصور محدد لطبيعة العلاقة بينهما؛ سواء داخل المجالات المعرفية المختلفة أو داخل المجالات المعرفية المختلفة أو داخل مجال واحد فحسب.
ولما كان موضوع هذا الكتاب هو درس هذا الزوج لدى بلاغي وناقد هو عبد القاهر الجرجاني أي في مجالين معرفيين محددين ومتصلين هما البلاغة والنقد ولدى عَلَمٍ من أعلامهما، استقرت الآراء على تميزه اللافت وخصوصيته الفريدة وإنجازه الخصب/فإن كلاً من تقاطع هذين المجالين مع مجموعة أخرى من المجالات المعرفية؛ مثل: أصول الفقه، وعلم الكلام، واللغة، والنحو، والتفسير، وغيرها من المجالات الأخرى، وحضور هذا الزوج في كل من المجالين السابقين والمجالات المتقاطعة معهما، وتعدد أبعاد عبد القاهر بما هو متكلم ونحوي وبلاغي وناقد، كان له دوره البالغ في الكيفية التي مارس بها هذا الزوج حضوره في نص عبد القاهر من ناحية، وفي صعوبة الامتلاك المعرفي للموضوع من ناحية أخرى.
