ولا شك أن مسألة إصلاح العقلية والعقيدة والأخلاق هي الرسالة الأساس التي اضطلع بها ذلك المصلح الاجتماعي الكبير، وأن هذا الجانب من التربية الإنسانية هو الذي حظي بكل اهتمامه في حياته الخصبة النافعة الراشدة، كان يكافح العادات والتقاليد السيئة المتحجرة، وينقد البدع والمعتقدات الفاسدة، كان يتصدى لكل هذا بهدف إصلاح الأخلاق في المجتمع الإسلامي عموماً وفي المجتمع العربي خصوصاً.
كان محمد عبده مفكراً أخلاقياً بطبعه وفطرته، ميالاً إلى العمل ميله إلى النظر، أحبّ مخاطبة الضمائر والتأثير في النفوس. وهذا الكتاب يكشف النقاب عن هذا الإمام المفكر وأعماله وتراثه الفكري الذي خلفه وأخباره ومبادئه في الإصلاح الديني والتعليمي والسياسي.
