خليل عثامنة، أستاذ التاريخ والدراسات الإسلامية في جامعة بير زيت، باحث ومؤرخ.
له كتابان في تاريخ فلسطين الإسلامية صدرا عن مؤسسة الدراسات الفلسطينية في بيروت: الأول بعنوان: "فلسطين في خمسة قرون" ويغطي تاريخ فلسطين منذ الفتح الإسلامي حتى الغزو الأوروبي الصليبي، والثاني بعنوان "فلسطين في العهدين الأيوبي والمملوكي".
وله أيضاً مساهمات جادة في الدراسات التاريخية الإسلامية.
فقد قام بتحقيق وتقديم ونشر الجزء السادس "ب" من موسوعة "أنساب الأشراف" التاريخية للمؤرخ والنسابة الكبير أحمد بن يحيى البلاذري.
وبالإضافة إلى ذلك كتب عشرات الدراسات ذات الصلة بقضايا المجتمعات الإسلامية في العصور الوسيطة، باللغتين الإنكليزية والعربية، في أمهات الدوريات والمجلات الأكاديمية في الغرب والشرق والعربي.

كانت مدينة القدس منذ القدم حاضرة في وجدان الأجيال العربية المتعاقبة؛ فقد كانت قطب الرحى لعقيدة إبراهيم التوحيدية، ومن بعدها لعقيدة المسيح (عليه السلام) التي تبلورت وانطلقت من هذه المدينة المقدسة، وجعل الإسلام المقدس محوراً أساسياً للقداسة، كثيراً ما جارت قداسة الكعبة ومكة المكرمة.
ولأن المكتبة العربية تفتقر إلى دراسات علمية منهجية باللغة العربية ولمؤلفين عرب عن مدينة الدقس، فقد انصرف المؤلف طوال أعوام إلى تقصي الصلات والوشائج التي تربط الإسلام والمسلمين بمدينة القدس، فغاص في أغوار التراث الديني والفكري للإسلام بحثاً عن جذور هذه العلاقة وجوهرها.
واليوم إذ تمعن القيادة الصهيونية المتطرفة في إسرائيل في تهويد المدينة ومحو تاريخها وتراثها العربي الإسلامي - المسيحي، يأتي هذا الكتاب ليضع حقائق تاريخ القدس في صلب الحاضر دفاعاً عن المستقبل.
