كان للبنانيين حساب خاص مع القرن الذي انطوى... فربعه الأخير حفل على قدر من الأخطار كادت أن تغيّب ما كان بني بالوعد والأمل، في عملية قيام لبنان ككيان مستقل وكوطن نهائي لجميع أبنائه... ولكن بالرغم من ذلك فإن المراهنة على المستقبل بالنسبة إلى اللبنانيين، تبقى وحدها الكفيلة بالتحرر من أثقال الماضي القريب. بهذه الروح أراد المؤلف معالجة بعض جوانب النظام السياسي اللبناني للتأكيد على الثوابت التي لا تنفصم عن الكيان من جهة، والمراهنة على المستقبل من جهة ثانية من حيث حتمية نجاح التجربة اللبنانية. أما مساوئ النظام ومشوهاته فإن المؤلف يسوقها ليس من باب الحكم على النظام اللبناني وإدانته، بل في سبيل الدعوة إلى إصلاحه انطلاقاً مما تثبّت وتكرس على مدى حقب وسنوات. إن هذه المعالجة التي ضمنها هذا الكتاب من خلال فصوله ذات المواضيع المختلفة، هي مزيج من حكايات دستورية وسياسية واجتماعية وتاريخية لواقع النظام من خلال المجتمع والأفراد والمحيط المجاور، كما ظهرت لأفراد جيل صدّقوا ما قيل لهم عن التجربة اللبنانية، وآمنوا بعدد من ثوابتها، وشاهدوا من خلال التجربة ما يعتور هذا النظام.
