"راحت المرأتان اللتان أحب من الدنيا إلى حيث لا جوع، وبقي الرجل الذي راح إلى ما وراء البحر، وانقطعت أخباره منذ ا، كانت الحرب، فهل يرجع يوماً إليه؟ عمّو فؤاد يقول: سيرجع، وقلبه كذلك. وبانتظار اليوم الذي سيرجع فيه، كف عفيف عن بكاء المرأتين اللتين لا أمل برجوعهما بعد، وحصر كل تفكيره بأبيه. ورآه ذات ليلة في منامه، كما لو كان في اليقظة. فإذا هو يضمه إلى صدره الضمة التي لم يعرف مثلها من قبل، وبكثير من الحنان والحبّ يخاطبه: أبو عفيف: عفيف، ولدي... في قيد الحياة أنت؟ عفيف: كما ترى، يا أبي. أبو عفيف: يسعدني هذا. عفيف: وأنا، سعادتي بعودك إلي لا توصف. أبو عفيف: ما عدت بعد إليك. عفيف: كيف... أما أنت هنا، أراك بعيني، وأسمعك بأذني؟ أبو عفيف: بروحي أنا معك. عفيف: وبجسدك؟ أبو عفيف: ما زال في الغربة، أكابد ما أكابد من شوقي إليك، وأنباء النكبة النازية بالوطن تصورك لي... أتكون حقاً حياً؟ عفيف: أما تراني، وتسمعني؟ أبو عفيف: بلى، وأنا سعيد... والرجل الطيب الذي يرعاك، ويبسط عليم جناح حمايته؟ عفيف: عمّو فؤاد.. أما عرفت، أما أتاك نبأ المصاب الذي الم به؟ أبو عفيف: أي مصاب؟ عفيف: ماتت، ماتت عمتي هدى. أبو عفيف: امرأته؟ عفيف: بالحمى ماتت... بالحمى الخبيثة التي أودت بحياة خالتي نظيرة قبلها. أبو عفيف: ونظيرة ماتت؟ عفيف: ماتت. أبو عفيف: رحمة الله على المرأتين الكريمتين... وعمّ, فؤاد ما حاله؟ عفيف: تريد أن تراه؟ أبو عفيف: شوقي إليه شديد. وأفاق عفيف من نومه، وفي نفسه مما رأى عاملان، عامل أمل وعامل خيبة، وهو ما يدري لأيهما يستسلم. أيكون من رأى وخاطب والده، والده حقاً؟ ليس له هو الصغير أن يجاوب عن هذا السؤال، فالجواب عنه يتطلب علماً يفتقر إليه، ورأى أن يروح ويطرحه على عمّو فؤاد".
