من اختيارات المفضل كانت نقطة انطلاق المؤلف في هذا الكتاب لما فيها من القيم التاريخية والفنية، التي جعلتها جديرة بالعناية والاهتمام.
إنها من أقدم كتب الاختيارات الشعرية، التي عرفها التاريخ العربي، وكان مولدها ظاهرة في تصنيف الأشعار، امتدت فروعها من القرن الثاني إلى عصرنا الحاضر.
وهي مصدر أساسي للشعر العربي القديم، لا يستطيع الدارس والمؤرخ الاستغناء عنه، فكثير من أشعاره فقدت دواوين أصحابها، فكانت المفضليات الحصن الحصين الذي حفظها من الفناء، وقدمها لما سليمة مصونة، اختارها المفضل الضبي، وهو عالم مشهود له، وراوية مأمون، فكانت وثيقة تاريخية، عزيزة الجانب، غنية المضمون، أجمع العلماء والنقاد حنى الآن، على أنها أحسن ما اختبر من القصائد، ووصفوا كثيراً من أشعارها، بأنه من عيون الشعر العربي.
لهذه الأسباب وغيرها كثير، لبث الأستاذ الدكتور المؤلف زمناً طويلاً مع المفضليات، ثم قد للمكتبة العربية (منهج التبريزي في شروحه، والقيمة التاريخية للمفضليات) كتاباً بين ما اختطه التبريزي من منهج في شروحه، بعد أن استعان بجهود أسلافه.
