إننا لا نستطيع اليوم الحديث عن الإسلام والغرب. فالإسلام بات حاضرا في عقر دارنا، وبصدد نشأة إسلام في الغرب، نتاج هذا التطعيم الجديد. أوليس ذلك منعرجا تاريخيا؟ فالتحول اليوم رهن التبلور، حتى وإن كان في مستهل انطلاقه.
لسنا واعين فعلا بما ستكون عليه النتائج. يمكن أن تخلّف هذه الحالة عديد الآثار، يمكن أن تعِد بأمل، ويمكن أن تخلّف ضرباً من الانزعاج أيضا، وهذا الأخير ما يبدو أكثر بروزا.
الأمل متعدّد الأوجه، إنه جزء إضافي في نسيج الروابط الضرورية لسلام قارّ ودائم؛ الأمل ربما في نظام عالمي جديد، أو بالفعل في حوار مستجدّ ومثمر بين الديانات الكبرى. أما الغمّ، فحين يتسرّب الخوف ويزحف داخل الزوايا المظلمة في وعينا وفي مدننا، فيتجلّى في العناوين البارزة على الصحف، وحين يتعالى الصراخ على العدو الجديد، وربما يبلغ حدّ المناداة بحرب صليبية جديدة لمواجهة الإسلام".
