نحن لا نولد بنات (أو صبياناً) - إنما يجعلون منا هكذا! . ماذا يعني هذا؟ إنه يعني، أن الأطفال يُدفعون اعتباراً من يومهم الأول بصورة منتظمة إلى دور جنساني، ويُمسخون إلى كائن نسميه "أنثى" أو "ذكراً". هذه السيرورة تحجّم الإثنين، إلا أن البنت تُحدّ أكثر من الصبي في إمكانياتها الكامنة، تنقص في استقلاليتها، وتظلم على صعيد الواقع. لذلك يتناول هذا الكتاب البنات بالدرجة الأولى - ويتناول الصبيان فقط بقدر ما هي المقارنة بين تربية البنات وتربية الصبيان هامة لفهم "التدريب على الأنوثة".
إن الفروق القائمة اليوم بين النساء والرجال - نفسياً وفيزيولوجياً - مرهونة كلياً بالمجتمع، باستثناء وحيد هو تلك الفروق البيولوجية المرتبطة بوظيفة الحبل والإنجاب، أي الفرق التشريحي في الأعضاء الجنسية، وكذلك الفرق الهرموني والصبغي، وكل شيء مشتق من ذلك هو نتيجة التقسيم الجنساني للعمل، نتيجة سيادة الرجال على النساء في مجتمعنا. وهذه العلاقات الإجتماعية الجنسانية يعاد إنتاجها في عملية الجمعنة الجنسانية. لكن كيف يحدث هذا بالضبط، عبر أية أواليات وبأية أهداف ملموسة، هذا ما سوف أبحثه في هذا الكتاب.
إن ما تسمى طبيعة "أنثوية" و "ذكرية" كانت وما تزال وسيلة لإضفاء الشرعية على استمرار سيادة الرجال على النساء، وكما تتخذ ذريعة لتوزيع العمل تبعاً للجنس.
