يركز هذا الكتاب على مسألة الهوية عند الآخر الإسرائيلي. قسم المؤلف كتابه إلى خمسة فصول، الأول حركة المؤرخين الجدد، بين فيه كيف ينظر هؤلاء إلى دولتهم الناشئة إسرائيل وإلى نكبة عام 1948 وكيفية طرد الفلسطينيين لدى قادة اليهود منذ هرتزل، وأثبت الصلة الوثيقة بين هؤلاء القادة ومنفذي الجرائم العسكرية، ثم أشار إلى الهولوكوست ميدان الاختلاف الذي راجعه المؤرخون الجدد وكيف صار مكوناً أساسياً في الهوية اليهودية.
وتحدث في الفصل الثاني عن الهوية والخطاب السياسي العرقي، صوغ الهوية، وتدرج تعريف الذات اليهودية من الطرح الكنعاني فالعبري فالصباري فالإسرائيلي فاليهودي، وانتقل إلى التنوير اليهودي (الهسكلاه) والمبادئ التي بني عليها، ثم انتكاسه بسبب عوامل خاصة منها ظهور الصهيونية. وتحدث بعدئذ عن ثوابت الهوية وإشكالاتها من خلال رؤى عديدة، وفصل في النظرة العنصرية، في دولة إسرائيل، إلى مواطنيها بدءاً بالدائرة الأوسع (يهود الشرق) ثم من ضمنها (اليهود العرب) ثم عرب 1948 الذين عانوا من اغتراب الهوية.
ونجد في الفصل الثالث كلاماً على الاستشراق وخاصة في ألمانية بحكم علاقة اليهود بالنازية. نرى بعده حديثاً عن محاولة الصهيونية إرساء مفهوم الهوية اليهودية تشابه نظيرتها الأوربية بلباس كولونيالي يسوقنا ذلك إلى الفكر الكولونيالي والنظرة العرقية الدونية للإسرائيليين تجاه الآخر. وإنساق الكتاب في الفصل الرابع إلى البحث فيما بعد الصهيونية مبدوءاً بمرحلة ما بعد الحداثة التي تنقد مفاهيم الحداثة العربية ثم علاقة ما بعد الحداثة بالهوية ثم الهوية في الشكل ما بعد الصهيوني وما بعد الحداثي. وفي الفصل الأخير تناول المؤلف بالحديث الذات العربية وحركة التنوير العربي ومفاجأتي نكبة 1948 ثم نكسة حزيران 1967 وأثرهما وتعدد الرؤى حول أسبابهما وأمراض الذات العربية وأسبابها من وجهة نظر بعض المفكرين. ختم الكتاب بنظرة العرب إلى المؤرخين الجدد. وألحق به ملحقان أحدهما ثبت بالمصطلحات المتعلقة بالدولة وثانيتها ثبت تعريفي ببعض المفكرين الإسرائيليين.
