إني لا أحبذ أن يهتم الجمهور بشخصيتي" هذه جملة من رسالة بعثها إلى "تورغنيف" تظهر تناقضاً جوهرياً، فالكتابة بالنسبة لفلوبير هي وسيلة لكي يسمعه القارئ دون أن يراه. ولكن، إذا كان يؤلف للخلق أو الخروب من نفسه، فهذه نقطة محض خاصة. لا يوجد كاتب أسير ذاته ووحدته كفلوبير. لقد حاول عبثاً أن يكون سامياً، غير مبال، لكن جميع مؤلفاته تخون أمانيه ورغباته.
وهذا لا يعبر، في تلك الحال، عن تقلبات سخيفة، بل عن إيحاءات من خلال مواضيعه المفضلة. هو نفسه يدعونا إلى أن نميز بين "شخصيته" (... لقد اختلفت لعملي جزئين. أحدهما في العالم الخارجي والآخر في أعماقي...) والأهم هو الناحية العملية، أما ذاتي الباطنية فتتدفق من خلالها أنقى شعاعات النفس... ليس فهم فلوبير بالمهمة السهلة. على الكاتب أن لا يترك من بعده سوى مؤلفاته... وحياته الخاصة لا تهمنا كثيراً. يدعي فلوبير فوق ذلك، أن الفن لا علاقة له بالفنان. يجب أن نعمل جاهدين لإخفاء ذاتنا.
فالمرجو هو عدم ظهور الكاتب من خلال مؤلفاته، على الأديب أن يشابه الله في خلقه، إن يكون في عمله خفياً وقادراً، إن نشعر به في كل مكان دون أن نلمحه، ومن هنا يظهر تجديد فلوبير. إنه عمل مبهم يتربع المؤلف في وسطه دون أن يبدو رغم ذلك أنانياً.
هكذا كان فلوبير، وهكذا كان يفكر ويكتب ولمن أراد الإطلاع أكثر على منهجه في الكتابة وسيرته الذاتية وفلسفته في الحياة فما عليه سوى قراءة مضمون هذا البحث الذي بين يدينا والذي وضع خصيصاً ليسرد سيرة هذا الروائي الكبير وليبين كيف توصل إلى أن يكون بهذه الشهرة، كما تهدف الدراسة إلى تقويم أفكاره عبر شرحها لآرائه وذلك من خلال كتاباته.
