في آذار (مارس 1988) أدين الإسرائيلي المغربي المولد، البالغ من العمر 33 عاماً موردخاي فعنونو، ووجدته محكمة منطقة القدس مذنباً بتهم الخيانة، والتجسس الفاحش، وجمع معلومات سرية بنية إلحاق الضرر بأمن إسرائيل، وحكم عليه بالسجن 18 عاماً.
وكان قد اتهم بهذه الجرائم الخطرة لأنه أعطى صحيفة "الصنداي تايمز" اللندنية معلومات سرية للغاية حول إنتاج إسرائيل لمواد تستخدم في الأسلحة النووية، وهي معلومات كان قد جمعها خلال فترة عمله كتقني في مفاعل ديمونا النووي الإسرائيلي في صحراء النقب من 2 تشرين الثاني (نوفمبر) 1976 وحتى 27 تشرين الأول (أكتوبر) 1985.
وقد نشر بعض هذه المعلومات يوم 5 تشرين الأول (أكتوبر) 1986 في مقال بعنوان "الصنداي تايمز تكشف أسرار الترسانة النووية الإسرائيلية". ويقدم هذا الكتاب تفصيلاً للمعلومات التي قدمها فعنونو عن ديمونا. فيتحدث عن قدرات إسرائيل النووية، الغرض من أسلحة إسرائيل الذرية، أنواع الأسلحة النووية، الرقابة الدولية للأسلحة النووية كما ويجب عن الأسئلة التالية: هل تستطيع منظمة التحرير الفلسطينية أن تصبح نووية؟ ما هو الغرض من أسلحة إسرائيل الذرية؟...
