هذا الكتاب وقد كان في الأصل أطروحة دكتوراه- يرصد للعلاقة بين المثقف والسلطة في مصر بين عامى 1952- 1968(تاريخ آخر وزارة شكلها جمال عبد الناصر) وإن عاد التمهيد النظري والتاريخ إلى قبل ذلك بسنوات. والمثقف هنا, أياً كان انتماءه, لم يخرج عن الدين الإسلامي أو الليبرالي أو اليساري.. والسلطة هنا أياً كانت مؤسساتها, لم تخرج عن هيمنة عبد الناصر وشخصيته الكارزمية..
وقد كان أهم ما وصلت إليه العلاقة بين الطرفين (المثقف والسلطة) هو إختفاء نمط المثقف المتمرد لحساب بقية الأنماط الأخرى, فلم يلبث المثقفون أن تحولوا في الفترة التالية في سبعينيات السادات إى الأفندية الأرذال (وهو موضوع دراسة أخرى لكاتب هذه السطور تحت الطبع بعنوان: المثقفون والسادات).
لقد إختفي أو كاد نمط المثقف المتمرد تحت هيمنة السلطات التالية وضرورتها العاتية. ولا يعنى ذلك أن نلقي بتبعية هذه النتيجة على النظام وحده, إذ يتحمل المثقفون جزءاً لا يمكن التقليل منه والذى انتهى بهم إلى هذا الواقع, فقد إرتد منهم الكثير من موقف المتمرد إلى المتردد أو المهادن, كما لم يدافعوا بالقدر الكافي عن القيم الديمقراطية, وهو ما يعني- في السياق الأخير- أن المسئولية مشتركة بينهما.
