كان قدر إدوارد سعيد أن يكون رفيقه الترحال، فمع ارتحاله القسري المبكر، ومع اعتقال الأرض، التي كان ينبغي أن تثبت عليها قدماه، لم يعد للأمكنة ذلك المعنى المألوف، بل صارت كلها –بعد غياب الوطن- أشبه بمحطة عبور لا يشده إليها مجرد حنين، ولا تربطه بها ألفة المشتاق إلى وطنه. أصبح سعيد "خارج المكان"، ومع تجواله في الأماكن الغريبة جاءت أسفاره في عوالم الثقافة التي كان مشغوفاً باستكشاف خباياها ومشاهدها، فارتحل من الفلسفة إلى التاريخ إلى الديموغرافيا فالأدب السياسي، وترك في كل مكان بصمته. لم يكن سعيد، إذن، رحالة يجمع التذكارات من سجلات التاريخ ومشاهد الحياة اليومية بقدر ما كان ينتج تذكارات جديدة تدمغ الأماكن التي يرتادها والسجلات التي يطالعها.
آمن سعيد بانسياب الأفكار والنظريات في العالم، وبانعدام الحواجز بين الثقافات والحضارات، لأن من شأن هذا الانسياب العفوي وحده أن يصنع ثقافة كونية جمعية، وكان حتمياً أن يرافق كل هذا وذاك اختفاء الحدود بين حقول المعرفة المختلفة، وهذا ما جعل فكر إدوارد سعيد إرثاً إنسانياً يتخطى الحواجز، نسافر فيه على طرق إضاءتها لنا أسفار سعيد في عالم الثقافة.
