يبحث هذا الكتاب كما هو ظاهر من اسمه في علاقة اللفظ بالمعنى وهو موضوع لم يصل الباحثون بشأنه إلى موقف حاسم، والظاهر في اللغة الواضح، والغالب، والراجح والبدي. كما أن للظاهر معاني أخرى وردت في بعض العلوم، يستطرق إليها البحث عند الحديث عن علوم العربية المختلفة التي استخدمتها. يقع هذا الكتاب في أربعة فصول. الفصل الأول يتناول مفهوم الظاهر اللغوي في الثقافة الإسلامية، حيث يسجل المؤلف أن ما يكشف عنه البحث هو أن مفهوم الظاهر الذي طرحه اللغويون العرب ما هو إلا موقف حذر في مسألة ارتباط اللفظ بالمعنى، وهو يعني هنا الارتباط العملي من حيث وقوع آثاره وحتمية دلالته أو عدمها.
أما الفصل الثاني فهو مخصص لبحث موضوع الظاهر عند النحويين واللغويين. وموضوع هذا الفصل هو التحديدات والضوابط وأثرها في علوم اللغة والعلوم المبنية عليها. ويتناول الفصل الثالث الظاهر عند البلاغيين والنقاد، حيث أن الحديث الظاهر البلاغي يستدعي الحديث عن المعنى البلاغي، ذلك أن وجود ظاهر بلاغي يعني وجود تأويل هو خلاف هذا الظاهر. وفي الفصل الرابع يبحث المؤلف موضوع الظاهر اللغوي عند الفقهاء والمفسرين وهذا يعني الحديث عن الأثر العملي وثمرة التطبيق لمفهوم الظاهر. ذلك أن الفقهاء والمفسرين من أهم من يتناول النصوص بالشرح والتفسير ويعرض لها بالنقد والتدقيق في الثقافة العربية.
