يضم هذا الكتاب، على غرار كتابنا السابق (غواية المتخيل المسرحي)، مجموعة من الدراسات والمقالات التي تجمع بين منحيين، نظري وتطبيقي، من الاشتغال النقدي في حقل المسرح. وقد كتبت ونشرت في دوريات وصحف عربية مختلفة بين عامي (1985-2000). وهي تتضمن، في الأغلب، قراءات في تجارب مسرحية (عروض ونصوص) من العراق، إضافة إلى تجارب عربية من الأردن، ومصر، وتونس، والإمارات العربية، والبحرين، أتيحت لنا فرصة مشاهدتها في المهرجانات المسرحية العربية، وبخاصة مهرجاني: المسرح الأردني، وأيام عمان المسرحية في عدد من دوراتهما. كما يشتمل الكتاب على بعض الدراسات المتعلقة بموضوعات محددة من نظرية المسرح ونقده مثل إشكالية الخطاب النقدي، والمكان/الفضاء، والحداثة، ومغالطة سلطة المتلقي، وتمثل نظريات النقد للمفاهيم المسرحية.
وقد اقتضى تباين موضوعات الكتاب (من دراسة بعض الظواهر المسرحية، إلى نقد العروض، ونقد النصوص) توزيعها على ثلاثة فصول، تناولنا في الفصل الأول ما أشرنا إليه من الدراسات المتعلقة بنظرية المسرح ونقده. وخصصنا الفصل الثاني لقراءات في سبعة عشر عرضاً مسرحياً لفرق عراقية وعربية، ومخرجين يمثلون أجيالاً مختلفة، منهم أسماء ذات تجربة في الإخراج المسرحي، مثل: سامي عبد الحميد، قاسم محمد، عوني كرومي، توفيق الجبالي، عز الدين قنون، عزيز خيون، فاضل خليل، حسن الجريتلي، خالد الطريفي، عبد الله المناعي، وشفيق المهدي. ومنهم أسماء أصبح لها حضور ومشاركة في تجارب بلدانهم المسرحية، والمهرجانات العربية، مثل غنام غنام، عواطف نعيم، وسوسن دروزة، وأخيراً أسماء واعدة تسعة إلى إثبات جدارتها وصقل مواهبها في الإخراج المسرحي، مثل عبد الكريم الجراح، إبراهيم المنسي، زيد القضاة، ومحمد الجراح.
أما الفصل الثالث فقد أفرزناه لقراءات في عشرة نصوص مسرحية لكتاب من العراق والأردن، وقطر، حاولنا فيها تحلي مستوياتها البنائية والدلالية،ـ والوقوف على عناصرها الدرامية، والرؤية التي تحكمت في صياغتها، أو وجهت الصراع الدائر بين شخصياتها.
وسيلاحظ القارئ بعض التباين في مستوى القراءات التي يتضمنها الفصلين الثاني والثالث، وبخاصة على صعيد المنهج، أو موجهات القراءة النقدية، كونها كتبت في مراحل متباينة من الوعي النقدي.
