يتضمن هذا الكتاب ثلاث دراسات عن الديمقراطية، دفعتني إلى كتبتها ثلاثة أمور:
الأول: حاجتنا إلى الديمقراطية فكراً وسلوكاً، وتخلفناً عن فهم هذه الحاجة، وعن بلورة موقف نظري وسياسي ديمقراطي.
الثاني: الدعاوى الديمقراطية التي تتداولها حواشي الطبقات الحاكمة في الأنظمة الظالمة، وبعض مروجي دعاوى "الديمقراطية، من حيث فهمها وتطبيقها.
وعلى كل حال، فإن هدفي كان محاولة إيضاح كل القضايا التي ناقشتها، وإظهار ترابطها، وكنت، إذا أشرت إلى نقطة في مكان، ووجدت أنها غير واضحة، عدت إلى إيضاحها في مكان آخر، وبطريقة أوسع وأوضح.
