يأتي هذا الكتاب في سياق محاولة "متجددة" من الباحث تقديم نظرية في "تحليل الخطاب"، قائمة على "تلقي الخطاب"، و"إنشاء الخطاب" معاً. وقد وسمتها بـ"النظرية الحجاجية الإدراكية في تلقي الخطاب". فهي "نظرية حجاجية" بالنظر إلى إنشاء المتكلم، وهي "نظرية إدراكية" بالنظر إلى تلقي المخاطَب. وقد شرعت في تكوين النظرية الحجاجية الإدراكية، بعد أن وضعت سؤالا رئيسا تضطلع به النظرية، وهو: كيف يمكن تحليل الخطاب انطلاقا من إنشائه وتلقيه في الوقت نفسه؟ ومن ثم هدفت الدراسة إلى تقديم نظرية تسهم في تحليل الخطاب من منظورين: حجاجي وإدراكي. فجعلت الكتاب في ثلاثة أبواب، جعلت الباب الأول مدخلا مفاهيميا للنظرية، وخصصت الباب الثاني لعرض العناصر التحليلية للنظرية، ووقفت في الباب الثالث على حواف النظرية، فجعلته للمباحث الذهنية ذات العلاقة بالنظرية. فجاءت الدراسة في أحد عشر فصلا. كما ختمت الباب الثاني بنماذج تحليلية مختصرة حتى يتمكن محللو الخطاب من استخدامها مباشرة. وحتى تكتمل النظرية، فقد اضطلعت بالإجابة على طيف واسع من الأسئلة التفصيلية، التي تجتمع وديانها لتصب في نهر النظرية الكبير. وكل فصل من فصول الدراسة يعنى بالإجابة على مجموعة من هذه الأسئلة، التي تكشف جوانب مختلفة من النظرية، وتلقي الضوء على القضايا ذات الصلة. وألحقت بالدراسة معجما مفاهيميا للمصطلحات المستخدمة في الدراسة، اشتمل على ما يزيد عن (380 مصطلحا) أعدت بناء مفاهيمها، بما يتلاءم مع النظرية الحجاجية الإدراكية. وخصصت الفصل الأول للتحقيق في مفهومين من المفاهيم ذات الأهمية البالغة في الدراسة، وهما (نظام، وخطاب)، وما يتصل بهما من مصطلحات ذات علاقة. كما جعلت الفصل السادس للتحقيق في بعض المفاهيم ذات العلاقة بالمجال الذهني. وقد أغنيت الكتاب بمجموعة واسعة من الأشكال والجداول، التي تساعد القارئ على نمذجة العناصر التحليلية أو النظرية.
