بعد ترجمته إلى 14 لغة عالمية صدرت عن الدار العربية للعلوم ناشرون الطبعة العربية لكتاب «كوفيد – 19: الوباء الذي ما كان يجب أن يظهر وكيف نتجنب الوباء التالي» الكتاب من تأليف ديبورا ماكينزي وترجمة زينة إدريس ومراجعة وتحرير مركز التعريب والبرمجة في بيروت. تُعدّ ديبورا ماكينزي التقارير عن الأمراض الناشئة منذ أكثر من ثلاثة عقود، وتستفيد من هذه التجربة لتشرح لنا كيف انتقل كوفيد - 19 من وباء يمكن السيطرة عليه إلى جائحة عالمية.
تروي ماكينزي في كتابها «كوفيد - 19: الوباء الذي ما كان يجب أن يظهر وكيف نتجنب الوباء التالي» تاريخ أهم الأوبئة الأخيرة، بما في ذلك السارس وميرس وإنفلونزا H1N1 وزيكا وإيبولا، كما تعطينا دورة مكثّفة في علم الأوبئة – كيف تنتشر الفيروسات وكيف تنتهي الجوائح – وتحدّد الدروس التي فشلنا في تعلّمها من الأزمات السابقة كما تخبرنا بتفاصيل حيّة كيف ظهر كوفيد - 19 وانتشر، وتوضح الخطوات التي عرفت الحكومات أنّه كان بإمكانها اتّخاذها للحؤول دون انتشار الفيروس أو على الأقل الاستعداد له. أمّا بالنسبة إلى المستقبل، فتُقدم ماكينزي حجّة جريئة ومتفائلة. قد تؤدي هذه الجائحة في النهاية إلى تحفيز العالم على أخذ الفيروسات على محمل الجدّ. فمكافحة هذا الوباء وتجنّب الوباء التالي يستلزمان إجراءات سياسية متنوّعة على مستوى العالم، من جانب الحكومات والمجتمع العلمي والأفراد – لكنّ ذلك ليس مستحيلاً. لم يسبق لأحد حتّى الآن أن جمع في عمل واحد ما نعرفه عن كوفيد - 19 بطريقة شاملة وغنيّة بالمعلومات، وبأسلوب يسهل فهمه. غير أنّه ليس من المبكر عرض هذه الدراسة التي عجّلت ديبورا ماكينزي في وضعها بين أيدينا، بل إنّ قراءتها واجبة في هذا الوقت وما بعده. صحيح أنّه من السابق لأوانه أن نعرف إلى أين تتجّه جائحة كوفيد - 19، لكنّ أوان الحديث عن الأخطاء التي ارتكبت وكيفيّة تجنّبها لاحقاً قد آن منذ زمن.
في نصٍّ مشوّق يسهل فهمه على المجتمع غير العلمي، تعرض صحفية علمية مخضرمة القصّة الصادمة لكيفية تفشّي جائحة الفيروس التاجي كوفيد - 19، وما يجب فعله لتجنّب حدوث ذلك مجدّداً.
