تأتي هذه الدراسة لتُدخل الباحث نبيل محمد صغير، إلى عالم نقد النقد بكل حمولته المعرفية والمنهجية، وقد ولج من خلالها، وبكل اقتدار، إلى مرايا عبد العزيز حمودة، من أجل تفكيكها، والغوص في مرجعياتها، ومعاينة آلياتها وبدائلها. وكل ذلك من أجل سبر أغوار نقد النقد الذي هو خطاب على خطاب، يفرض على المشتغل به أن يكون معلّقاً يلاحق آثار الأول في الثاني، وسيرورة الثاني من خلال الأول، وهو مسعى فيه كثير من المجازفة التي تقتضي التمرّس النقدي الحصيف والانتقال من الوصف إلى المقارنة، ومن الأحكام إلى التنظير، ومن التحليل إلى التأويل، وكل ذلك في حركة بين مدّ وجزر، وفي تفاعل كان عبد العزيز حمودة قارئا ومقروءا، اقتضى من الباحث أن يقدّم قراءة مضاعفة فرضت عليه أن ينتقل من الأحادية إلى نوع ممن العقل النقدي المركب.
إنّ تركيز الباحث على مشروع هذا الرجل، ليس راجعاً للجدل الذي أثارته مراياه في النقد العربي المعاصر، فحسب، بل لكونه استطاع، وفي مرحلة معيّنة من المعرفة النقدية العربية أن يضعها كلها موضع شك وتساؤل، وأن يسائل علاقة النقد العربي المعاصر في علاقته بالثقافة الغربية والعربية، ويكشف عن المرتكزات الإيديولوجية والفلسفة المضمرة التي وجّهت حركية النقد العربي المعاصر، وما حمله مشروعه من تشكيك في طبيعة العلاقة التي ربطت النقاد الحداثيين العرب مع التراث النقدي العربي، وطبيعة الوعي التجزيئي الذي احتكم إليه دعاة البنيوية من النقاد العرب.
