هذا السفر الجليل "تهذيب الأسماء الواقعة في الهداية والخلاصة" يعد من أهم مراحل ظهور طور الإمام المذهبي، حيث تطورت المذاهب من أقوال الأئمة إلى متن يحوي حدود المذهب وأقوال الأصحاب. ثم ظهر من برع في حفظ هذا المتن ووضعه وتنقيحه ولشرحه والعمل على نصرة المذهب ولم يخل مذهب من منافح عنه والتاريخ خير شاهد.
وفي هذا الكتاب الماثل بين يدي القارئ تناول مصنفه جانباً وفرعاً من كتب المتون فعمل على خدمته حيث تناول تراجم الأعلام الواردة في كتابي الهداية والخلاصة، فكان إبداع منه، وعقد بعد مقدمته فصلاً في أهمية ذكر الأعلام والعجيب في مادة الكتاب وإن كان موضعا لأول مذهب ظهر إلا أن نفس المادة سبق بها الإمام شرف الدين النووي الشافعي في كتابه المرسوم "تهذيب الأسماء واللغات، وتلاحظ لأول وهلة تشابه العنوانين إلى حد كبي بل نقل المؤلف نفسه من تهذيب الأسماء واللغات في بعض المواطن فمن ذلك ما ذكره من فوائد تراجم الرجال فهي بعينها ضيع الإمام النووي في كتابه المار، ولا ينقص ذلك من قدر المؤلف شيئاً بل يعطي انطباعاً عن تهيأ أهل المذاهب.
لما وجد المؤلف طلاب العلم مهتمين بالهداية لبرهان الدين الفرغاني، والخلاصة لحسام الدين الرازي الكاساني رأى أن يخدم الكتابين بترجمة الأعلام الواردة أسماؤهم فيها فصنف كتابه هذا " تهذيب الأسماء " على نسق " تهذيب " النووي، وقد ترجم لجميع الأعلام أنبياء كانوا أو علماء أو غيرهم . فابتدأ بسيدنا محمد صلى الله عليه وسلم ثم رتبهم على حروف المعجم ذاكرا من ورد باسمه، ثم الكنى، ثم الأنساب، ثم الألقاب، ثم ابن فلان.
