في كتابه "الحدود الإفريقية والانفصال في القانون الدولي" يوضح الدكتور الدرديري محمد أحمد دواعي نشوء النظام الإفريقي للإقليم وكيفية تَشَكُله ويُحرر المفاهيم التي تميزه؛ فيبين أن قرار الدول الإفريقية باحترام الحدود القائمة، دون أن تكون ملزمة قانوناً، قد قاد إلى إقرار "عدم المساس بالحدود الموروثة" قاعدة عُرفية جديدة إضافة إلى ذلك، أدى إعلان القاهرة إلى تطوير ممارسة دولية في احترام واستدامة الوضع الإقليمي الذي تحقق عند الاستقلال، تطورت إثرها قاعدة "الوضع الراهن" التي تستديم الترتيب الحدودي الذي خلّفه المستعمر نتيجة لذلك، نشأ في إفريقيا نظام عُرفي للإقليم غيّر كثيراً من الكيفية التي ينطبق بها القانون الدولي على إفريقيا. وبشكل خاص شدّد ذلك النظام على منع إعادة ترسيم الحدود الإفريقية وحظّر الانفصال جاعلاً من هذين العُرفين مبدأين قانونيين آمرين لا يجوز للدول مخالفتهما أو الاتفاق على ما عداهما.
وعليه يبين المؤلف في هذا الكتاب القواعد القانونية البديلة التي ابتدعتها إفريقيا لتنظيم إقليمها وحدودها، ويدرس مسألة حظر الانفصال في إفريقيا؛ فيوضح كيف أن القاعدة الإفريقية لتحريم الانفصال جاءت نتاجاً لتكريس حدود الاستقلال واستدامة الوضع الإقليمي الراهن. فبسبب هذه القاعدة المركزية لا تتأتى المطالبة بالانفصال علناً في إفريقيا ولا يجوز لدولة إفريقية أن تُقِرَ مطلباً انفصالياً صريحاً. وتحاشياً للكلفة السياسية الباهظة للمناداة بالانفصال جهرة، يعمد الانفصاليون في إفريقيا إلى التظاهر باحترام القاعدة الإفريقية ويتقدمون بدعاوى بديلة على أمل أن تلقى صدى لدى المنظمة الإفريقية واستجابة من الدولة الأم. فمنهم من يزعم أنه يسعى لإحياء حق قديم في استفتاء التحرر من الاستعمار كما حدث في إريتريا، ومنهم من يطالب بحق دستوري في تقرير المصير كما كانت دعوى جنوب السودان، ومنهم من يعمل للانفصال التصحيحي بزعم إنكار حقه في التمثيل الحكومي كما قيل بشأن كاتنفا، وقد أدّى هذا التمويه إلى تشويه النظام الإفريقي وتعقيد ظاهرة الانفصال في القارة مما صعّب فهمها وعَسّر من تقديم الحلول لها.
