هذا الكتاب مقدمة عامة لدراسة العالم دراسة إقليمية لذلك كان طبيعياً أن يبدأ بدراسة مناطق العالم الكبرى، أو الأقاليم العامة، كمدخل لدراسات متقدمة أكثر تفصيلاً، يلم بها القارئ في مراحل تالية. فكتاب في مثل هذا الحجم لا يمكن أن يتناول أقاليم العالم إلا في دراسة تمهيدية عامة.
وقد رأينا أن نقدم لدراسة أقاليم العالم بفصلين تمهيديين في الأسس النظرية لعلم الجغرافيا، ومن ثم الفصل الأول لنتعرف منه على مفهوم علم الجغرافيا وميدانه وأقسامه، أما الفصل الثاني فقد خصص لدراسة أشمل في مفهوم الجغرافيا الإقليمية وفكرة الإقليم ثم أنواع الأقاليم التي يستخدمها الجغرافيون في دراساتهم. ويتناول كل فصل من الفصول التالية إقليماً من أقاليم العالم الكبرى، التي رأينا أن نأخذ بها في هذه الدراسة العام’، ذلك لأنها قريبة من ذهن القارئ العادي، وهي:أوروبا، الاتحاد السوفيتي، الشرق الآسيوي، الشرق الأوسط، إفريقيا المدارية والجنوبية، الإقيانوسية، جزر المحيط الهادي بما فيها استراليا، أمريكا اللاتينية، أمريكا الشمالية.
وقد زود الكتاب بكثير من الخرائط لتسهل على القارئ، متابعة ما استغلق عليه من أسماء أو مواقع.
