أعجبت بشعر العقاد وأنا في فجر الحياة ولما أبلغ العشرين. ووجدت في دواوينه الأولى لذة يعرفها الشاب المعتد بنفسه في غياب الحب، المتهور في إقدامه وهو بعيد عن منال قبضة الحب الصارمة. ووجدت أن في شعر العقاد عن الحب ما كان يجب أن أقوله، وأصرح به. ولذلك فقد أخذت في قراءته وترديده سراً وإعلاناً. وكانت لي محاولة أولى في الكتابة عن تجربة العقاد عن الحب في محاضرة ألقيتها وأنا في الخامسة والعشرين. ثم تبين لي أن العقاد والحب هما صنوان لا يفترقان، وأن هناك الكثير مما يجب أن يقال عنهما. وأخذت أعد العدة للكتابة عنهما في سفر يتناول العلاقة بينهما.
