تنطلق هذه الدراسة من فرضية مفادها أن الأعمال الأدبية ليست تحققات أو تجليات لبنى مجردة، معارضة بذلك اتجاهًا سائدًا في "الشعرية البنيوية"، ينشغل بالبحث عن مبادئ أو قواعد عامة للأدب، أكثر من التفاته إلى الخصائص الفردية للأعمال، فالشعرية البنيوية- في جل تطبيقاتها- تواجه مأزق الكشف عن خصوصية العمل الأدبي في ظل سعيها الطموح إلى علم للأدب يقوم على المجرد والعام، ويتفادى الفردي والمتغير، وهو ما يصطدم بطبيعة العمل الأدبي الذي يأبى- بما هو نشاط تخييلي- النمذجة أو التعميم أو الاختزال إلى بنيات مجردة مغلقة. إنه يحقق وجوده وجالياته الخاصة، بتجادله- الذي يصل إلى حد القطيعة- مع المبادئ العامة أو التقاليد، ذلك أن النص أو النصوص ما هي إلا ممارسة خاصة حرة، ضمن احتمالات متعددة ومفتوحة، في شرط تاريخي واجتماعي وثقافي محدد.
وقد اختارت الدراسة لاختبار هذه الفرضية الأعمال السردية للكاتب المصري "إدوار الخراط". وهو اختيار يعي ما يعلنه الكاتب نفسه- وما يحاوله- من التحرر من التصنيفات النوعية المحددة، والخروج على مواضعات السرد التقليدي وقوالبه النمطية، بل الإحاطة بها؛ انحيازًا إلى أكثر اتجاهات الرواية المعاصرة جرأة وحداثة.
