اختلف العلماء في شأن الأحلام حتى عجزوا عن معرفة مصدرها ودلالاتها، فمنهم من رأى أنها هبة من الله تهتم من خلالها تهريب الرغبات المكبوتة والمحرقة (فرويد) ومنهم من ردها إلى نشوء الدين لدى البدائيين. لكن هذا لم يقف حائلاً أمام الناس من التماس التفسيرات والتأويلات لأحلامهم عبر العصور.
وقد وردت إشارات عديدة في القرآن الكريم تدل على صحة الأحلام بل أن بعض الفقهاء استدل على صحتها من الحديث الشريف وعدها الرؤيا جزءاً من ستة وأربعين جزء من النبوة وقد ثبت الدميري في موسوعته الكثير من الأحلام وهذا ما يعكس اعترافاً من العلماء بأثر الأحلام على حياتنا الاجتماعية، والمؤلف سعى جاهداً إلى إبراز ما ثبته الدميري في موسوعته عن الأحلام.
ويعرض في ثنايا كتابه إلى منهج الدميري في طرح الأحلام قبل أن يبين منهجه الذي اعتمده تسهيلاً على القارئ والباحث كما عرف بالحيوان غير المعروفة في الهامش وشرح بعض العبارات أو المصطلحات التي تحتاج إلى ذلك.
لاعتقاد بالأحلام قديم قدم الانسان , بل انها توأمه الذي لا ينفصل عنه وربانه في تحديد مساراته الحياتية الى أمد قريب لدى بعض الشعوب , والى الوقت الحاضر لدى اليعض الآخر .
