تحت عنوان "مدخل إلى مسألة الصناعة في التراث العلمي العربي الإسلامي" يسعى الدكتور محمد الطاهر العقبي إلى الربط في علاقة متوازنة ومتلازمة بين العلوم والفنون والصنائع في نصوص مخصوصة دًوّنت في غير غايات الأدب "يعني بذلك ما كان موصولاً بحركة التطور الإجتماعي والصناعي والثقافي، أو التطور المعرفي العام في شتى أشكال الثقافة في البيئة العربية الإسلامية، في العصر الوسيط، فكان التأليف في صناعة البناء والأدوية والزينة والطب العملي أو السريري والغذاء وكيمياء العطر والأصباغ والتجارة والفلاحة والفراسة والأسلحة، وما كان بها شبيهاً ... من هنا تبدو دراسة ثقافة الفعل الواقعي والإنتاج المادي من طريق النظر وإعادة النظر في وجوه الترابط بين العلوم والفنون والصنائع والحرف مهمة بغية رصد وظائفها وآثارها وخصائصها في تحقيق التمدن المادي فردياً وجماعياً ومؤسساتياً. لذلك كله استطاعت تصنيف الصناع والحرفيين وأعمالهم اليدوية المستحدثة والمبتدعية، أن تلهم طائفة من الكتّب والأدباء، فعبروا عن هذا الإلهام في كتاباتهم، وقد أتاحت متابعة مؤلف هذا الكتاب الجادة لموضوع الصناعة والصنّاع في الثقافة العربية الإسلامية، معرفياً وتاريخياً، أن يرصد لنا في هذا العمل، بعضاً من منازلها المعرفية ومراتبها الإجتماعية، في أنظمة المعرفة العربية في شتى أشكالها ومنازعها الدينية والحكميّة والعلمية وغيرها. وختم عمله بتحقيق وضبط ومراجعة مخطوط: أبي علي أحمد بن عبد الرحمن بن مندويه الأصفهاني (410ه) وعنوانه "مختصر في أجناس الطيب وذكر معادنه وألوانه ومعرفة المغشوش منه والصحيح وذكر أنواع صناعاته. والنص رسالة علمية صناعية، في أصول الطيب والمركبات العطرية، وقد أُلفت في القرن الهجري الرابع، وهي مهداة إلى خزانة إسماعيل بن عباد بن العباس أبي القاسم الطالقاني، المشهور بالصاحب بن عباد.
