لم يكن من المحتم أن تسير الرواية المصرية فى الطريق نفسه الذى قطعته الرواية فى بلاد الغرب المتقدمة وأن تقاطع الطريقان فى نقاط متعددة. فالرواية المصرية لم تبدأ أصلاً من نقطة البداية ذاتها التى بدأت منها الرواية العربية، أى بالذات الفردية وخبراتها فى مواجهة التقليد الجمعى وعلى أنقاضه. لقد كان القص السابق على الرواية فى كل مكان يرتكز على منظور الجماعة المتآلفة لا على التجربة الفردية التى هى أساس الأعمال الروائية. وفى مصر نشأت الفردية البورجوازية، أى فردية الطبقة الوسطى مع ارتباط المجتمع التقليدى المتفسخ بالسوق العالمية ومع تغلغل علاقات التبادل -وخاصة تلك المتداخلة مع سوق القطن- تدريجياً فى بطء داخل الإقتصاد الطبيعى والعلاقات العضوية لمجتمعنا القديم.
