توفر الأسماء الشائعة Common Names للحشرات الإقتصادية التي يتداولها المختصون في علم الحشرات سواء في مؤلفاتهم أو دراساتهم وبحوثهم بالأسس اللازمة للإتصال وتبادل المعلومات مع الباحثين والمزارعين والمهتمين بالحشرات الإقتصادية، فضلاً عن ما توفره الأسماء الشائعة من معلومات أساسية يمكن إستنباطها او إستنتاجها من الأسماء الشائعة للحشرات الإقتصادية وخاصة ما يتعلق منها بالعائل الغذائي أو الجزء الذي تهاجمه من العائل أو طبيعة الضرر الذي تحدثه للعائل.
لذا، فإن توحيد هذه الأسماء سيؤدي بلا شك إلى إزالة اللبس الناشئ أحياناً بسبب وجود أكثر من اسم شائع لنوع حشري معين، خاصة وأن الأسماء الشائعة قد تكون أكثر ثباتاً من الإسم العلمي الذي قد يتغير وفقاً للتغيرات التي تحدث في نظام التسمية العلمية الدولية أو نتيجة ضم أو تجزئة المراتب التصنيفية.
كما إن الأسماء العربية للحشرات الإقتصادية تعاني اليوم الكثير من الإرباك والخلل نتيجة عدم وجود معيار أو نظام موحد للتسمية الشائعة مما أدى إلى إرباك الباحثين في تحديد أو معرفة الإسم العلمي الصحيح للإسم الشائع لذلك النوع وذلك لوجود أكثر من اسم شائع له، لذلك فقد سعى المؤلف في هذا الكتاب إلى جمع الأسماء العلمية للحشرات الإقتصادية والأسماء العربية الشائعة لها والتي وردت في كتب الحشرات الإقتصادية والدوريات والمجلات والنشرات العربية المختلفة وترتيبها بالشكل الذي يؤدي إلى إزالة هذا الإرباك أولاً ولتكون نواة لعملية توحيد هذه الأسماء مستقبلاً من خلال وضع نظام عربي موحد للتسمية العربية الشائعة ثانياً.
