يتألف هذا الكتاب من مادة قدمت في الأصل كسلسلة مؤلفة من خمس محاضرات - محاضرات الكساندر - في جامعة تورونتو عام 1956، وقد لحقها فيما بعد شيء من التعديل، ثم نشرت في عام 1957 في إنجلترا وفي كندا، ثم ظهرت في هذا الكتاب الذي ننشره في الولايات المتحدة لأول مرة بعد أن أدركها شيء من التعديل والتنقيح.
وهذه الطبعة تشتمل على نفس المادة التي ظهرت في الطبعات السابقة، بالإضافة إلى هذه الملاحظات التمهيدية، وتلك الفقرة التي تناولت بها ت. س. إليوت في الفصل الثالث، وقد لجأت عند كتابتي لهذا الكتاب - إلى حد ما - إلى بعض آرائي التي كونتها عن السيرة وأذعتها لأول مرة في محاضرة من (محاضرات مودي) في جامعة شيكاغو عام 1952، وطورتها في مقدمتي لكتاب هنري جيمس: السنوات البكر (1953) Henry Jemes: The Untried Years، وفي مقدمتي لكتاب رسائل مختارة لهنري جيمس (1955) Selected Letters of Henry James.
وفي مقالة بعنوان "الزمن وكاتب السيرة" نشرتها في مجلة New Republic، وفي حديث أذعته في البرنامج الثالث من محطة الإذاعة البريطانية عام 1955، كما أن بعض هذه الافكار قد ورد في مقال تناولت فيه فن السيرة ونشرته عام 1956 في مجلة Times Book Review في نيويورك، وأود أن أعبر عن شكري وأمتناني للأستاذ (أ. س. ب. ودهاوس) ولجنته الذين دعوني لإلقاء (محاضرات الكساندر) في تورنتو، وكذلك (لمورتون دوون زييل) الذي كان أول من دفعتي للحديث عن نظرياتي في فن السيرة عند دعاني إلى شيكاغو لإلقاء (محاضرة مودي).
