يشكل هذا الكتاب قراءة في رحلة قديمة ونادرة قام بها الرحّالة اللواء محمد صادق باشا المولود في القاهرة عام 1822م، براً من مصر إلى مكة المكرمة، يذكر فيها أداء فريضة الحج.
كان الرحالة يلقب بـ محمد صادق بيك ميرالاي أركان حرب المصري، وهو واحد من أفراد بعثة الجيش الرابعة في مصر، والذي اختاره القائد سليمان باشا الفرنساوي، ليلتحق بالمدرسة الحربية المصرية في باريس، تحت إدارة إسطفان بك، مع الفوج الثاني الذي ضم أربعة أمراء منهم إثنان من أبناء محمد علي وهما: الأمير عبد الحليم والأمير أحمد، وبعد أن أتم علومه عاد إلى مصر، وكان ذلك في عهد سعيد باشا، فعيّن مدرساً للرسم في المدرسة الحربية بالقلعة، تحت نظارة العلامة الشهير رفاعة بك الطهطاوي.
وفي هذا الكتاب يصف محمد صادق بيك أو باشا ما شاهده براً في طريق الحج الشريف، وكيفية أداء هذه الفريضة الإسلامية؛ ليكون دليلاً مختصراً مفيداً للأمة المحمدية، وخدمة لأبناء الوطن، وسماه "بمشعل المحمل".
ورحلة مشعل المحمل هذه رسالة بديعة البيان، محتوية على جمل وتفاريق سفرته، فيما يتعلق بالحرمين الشريفين، فيضيء فيها مشاهداته، ويوضح مسائل الحج والإحرام، وكيفية أداء المناسك المطلوبة، ويفيض في حكمة تشريع تلك العبادات وأسرارها الخفية، ومحاسنها المطوية، إلى آخر ذلك من تنبيهات من علم التصوف، وإرشادات تصب في هذا الكتاب.
