استلمت في شهر يناير من عام 1880 برقية تستقدمني على وجه السرعة إلى مصر لأتولى التدريس لأبناء الخديوي من الذكور. وبالرغم من ان صديقًا على دراية بالشرق قد أوعز لي بأن السرعة تعني بالنسبة للشرقيين شهر أو اثنين إلا أنني ارتأيت وأثرت أن ألتزم حرفيًا بالنص، أو قل أنني لم أكن قد تعلمت بعد المثل المصري الذي يقول "العجلة من الشيطان".
لذا سرعان ما وجدت نفسي على متن سفينة طرود فرنسية مبحرة من خليج نابولي غير آسف على توديع هذا المشهد الصحو الذي كان آخر ما علق من أوروبا في ناظري. وبينما راحت السفينة تنأى من الشاطئ وقعت عيوننا على منظر القصر الأحمر بأبهته وفخامته حيث كان يعيش الخديوي السابق إسماعيل في كمد واستياء.
