لا يقتصر وجود الاضطرابات السلوكية على فئات معينة من الأطفال، لأن للطفل حاجات أساسية ينزع إلى إشباعها، وقد تعطل البيئة المحيطة عملية الإشباع هذه أو تحول دون إروائها، عندئذٍ يلجأ هؤلاء الأطفال إلى أساليب سلوكية شاذة، من هنا كانت الأهمية في دراسة الاضطراب السلوكي وطبيعة النمو الانفعالي عند الأطفال.
يعرض الكتاب سلوك الأنانية عند الأطفال وطرق الوقاية منها، كما يعرض سلوك العناد وصفات الطفل العنيد والغيرة وعلاجها ويبين صفات الطفل الخجول. وبما أن دراسة المخاوف عند الطفل تحتل أهمية خاصة لدى علماء النفس نتيجة الإحساس بالخطر الذي يتهدد الحياة والبقاء فإن التعريف بأسباب الخوف وأنواعه يقودنا إلى علاجه. يعرض أيضاً الكتاب اضطرابات الأطفال السلوكية كعادة مص الإصبع، وكذلك عادة قضم الأظافر.
كما يتحدث الكتاب عن سلوك الكذب عند الأطفال ويبين أسبابه وأنواعه وطرق علاجه، والسرقة باعتبارها انحرافاً واضحاً عن مسار السلوك السوي. ويستعرض العدوان والعوامل المحركة له، وصولاً إلى تحليل الموقف العدواني وأشكاله وضبط السلوك العدواني لدى الأطفال. يقدم الكتاب في عرض وافٍ ظاهرة الانطواء -السلوك الانعزالي عند الأطفال- أنماطه وتشخيصه وعلاجه، ويبين أسباب صعوبة اكتساب السلوك الاجتماعي عند الأطفال والعوامل المؤدية له، ويضع برنامجاً إرشادياً لعلاج صعوبة التكيف واضطرابات السلوك.
