إن ما يعرضه هذا الكتاب ليس سرداً تاريخياً آخر لأهم أحداث القرن العشرين، كالحربين العالميتين والحرب الباردة، بل هو يقدم قراءة تفسيرية وتحليلية لمجريات القرن العشرين المتناقضة عبر جدلية العولمة والتفكك؛ إذ يسعى إلى استقصاء التوجهات نحو العولمة وما يقابلها من نزعات الانفصال والتفكك في القرن العشرين، والتي هي عمليات لا تحدث على مستوى النظام الدولي فحسب، بل أيضاً على مستوى الإقليم والدولة نفسها.
وقبل أن يمضي الباحث في تحليله التاريخي قدماً، قام بتعريف العولمة والتفكك؛ إذ يرى أن "العولمة" لفظة يقصد بها التوجهات المتمثلة سواء في قوة التفاعلات الدولية أو في المدى الذي تحدث فيه هذه التفاعلات، لذا فهي بالمعنى الأول تتماثل مع أفكار مثل التكامل والتعددية والانفتاح، بينما تشير في المعنى الثاني إلى الانتشار الجغرافي لهذه الاتجاهات، وهي بذلك قريبة من مفاهيم العالمية والكونية والتجانس واختصار المسافات المكانية. أما "التفكك" فهي لفظة تعني عكس تلك الاتجاهات، غير أن لها البعدين كليهما: فهي توحي بالتفتت والاكتفاء الذاتي والأحادية والانغلاق والانعزال، كما تعني من ناحية أخرى التوجه نحو القومية أو الإقليمية والانفصالية والتمايز وتضخيم المسافات المكانية.
وقد بنى الباحث تحليله التاريخي على تصنيف القرن العشرين إلى مراحل وفترات تاريخية متباينة (مثل فترة ما بين الحربين العالميتين 1919-1939، وفترة ما بعد الحرب الباردة 1990-2000)، لمعرفة قوى العولمة والتفكك في كل فترة، باعتبارها أن هاتين القوتين هما مفتاحا فهم الخصائص المميزة للقرن العشرين.
