كانت دمشق على الدوام أكثر العواصم العربية المسكونة بالشعر والشعراء، فقاسموها أفراحها وأتراحها، فمنهم من تغنى بها شوقاً أو غنى لها حباً، ومنهم من هزته النكبات التي تعرضت لها دمشق فجاشت نفسه بقصائد حزن ومواساة. ودمشق عاصمة الدنيا أيام الأمويين، وعاصمة سورية وزينة الدنيا اليوم، ربما كانت من أكثر المدن التي تغنى الشعراء العرب بها وبسكانها منذ العصر الجاهلي، ولا يزالون يفعلون حتى اليوم.
في هذا الكتاب بعض أجمل وأندر القصائد التي قيلت عن دمشق.
