بدأت هذا الكتاب ببحث الحالة السياسية في مصر قبيل سلطنة بيبرس، فبينت العوامل التي أدت إلى انتقال الحكم من أيدي الأيوبيين إلى المماليك، والظروف التي ساعدت على ازدياد نفوذ المماليك البحرية وعلى رأسهم بيبرس، كذلك تحدثت عن الموقف السياسي الداخلي في عهد الظاهر بيبرس، فوضحت الصعوبات التي واجهته على أثر تقلده سلطنة مصر والأسباب التي دعته إلى إحياء الخلافة العباسية في القاهرة، ومن الموضوعات التي أوليتها اهتمامي سياسة مصر الخارجية في عهد الظاهر بيبرس، وبينت كيف اتسع نفوذ مصر بين الأقطار المجاورة لها التي ترتبط بها بأواصر قوية من الدين واللغة كبلاد النوبة والحجاز.
وكان للنظم والحضارة في مصر في صدر عصر المماليك حظ كبير من عنايتي، فبحثت تطور نطم الحكم والإدارة في هذا العصر، وبينت الجهود التي بذلت في سبيل إعداد قوة برية وأخرى بحرية لصد ما تتعرض له الدولة المصرية من غارات الأعداء، كما وضحت مدى ما وصلت إليه مصر من تقدم في ميدان الزراعة والصناعة والتجارة، وما أحرزته من رقي في الحياة العلمية والأدبية.
