يلقي هذا الكتاب، وهو الأول من نوعه، نظرة معمقة إلى كيفية قيام أفراد العائلة جميعاً والأُسر بـ "تجاوز الصعوبات"، والمناورة في أمور الحياة، وتحقيق الأهداف الشخصية والجماعية في فلسطين المحتلة. ويطرح المساهمون في الكتاب أسئلة حساسة تتناول الموروث الثقافي في مواجهة الحداثة، والنتائج الثقافية – الاٍجتماعية للهجرة. وبالتالي يقدم الكتاب البرهان على أن ديناميكيات الأسرة (أي زواج الأقارب، والقرارات المتعلقة بالإنجاب، وتعليم الأطفال، وترتيبات المعيشة) لا يمكن فهمها على نحو كامل ما لم يتم ربطها بصدمات الماضي وبهموم الحاضر. وعلاوة على ذلك، فاٍن الاستراتيجيات التي تضعها العائلات كي تتمكن من البقاء ومن الحراك الاجتماعي تحت نير الاحتلال، قد جرفها التاريخ الذي عمّ العالم حيث يعيش الفلسطينيون ويناضلون. وُضع الكتاب على أساس مشروع بحث شامل قام به معهد دراسات المرأة في جامعة بير زيت بهدف دراسة الأسرة الفلسطينية من زوايا متعددة، وذلك من خلال مسح أُجري لألفي أسرة في تسعة عشر تجمعاً.
