لقد عنيت بالنفس الديانات السماوية وكثير من الفلسفات البشرية، غير أن الكثير من أتباع هذه الديانات والفلسفات قد انساقوا في بحوثهم عن النفس مع الأهواء، فلذا اختلفت نظرتهم إلى النفس، وتناقضت آراؤهم فيها، وفي هذه الأقوال: القول بتناسخ النفوس والأرواح، حيث يستلزم نكران المعاد الذي هو أصل من أصول الاعتقاد، ويتنافى مع ما جاءت به رسل السماء من القول ببقاء النفس وخلودها وأن لكل جسم نفس أو روح ترجع إليه يوم ينشر الناس للحساب. ولوجود هذا التضارب الكبير والتهافت الكثير في حقيقة النفس وبقائها، وفي القول بتناسخها عند الفرق الباطنية كان للمؤلف أحمد زكي تفاحة هذا الكتاب الذي يحاول البحث في أبعاد هذه المقولة من خلال بعديها الفلسفي والديني. موضحاً الخطل في ما يذهب إليه أصحاب هذه الفلسفة.
