مدار هذا الكتاب على النظر في شأن ظاهرة "الحداثة" توسيماً لصفاتها واستشكالاً لآثارها، وذلك كما استقل بهذا النظر أحد أعظم مفكري الغرب الحديث بلا منازع (هيغل 1770-1831). ويعرض المؤلف من خلال هذا العمل إلى التحولات الدلالية العميقة التي مست جوهر الفلسفة في ألمانيا بداية القرن التاسع عشر والتي تأدت إلى إنشاء "قول فلسفي في الحداثة"، كما يعرض إلى "تشكل" الوعي الحديث، بدءاً من بوادر بروزه إلى غاية تمامه، وإلى "بنية" هذا الوعي وتعدد مناحيه، وقد سمح له النظر في متن الفلسفة المثالية الألمانية بعامة، ومتن هيغل بخاصة، باستقصاء أمر "نظرية الحداثة" واستخلاص سماتها العامة التي بها عرفت، وبيان حدودها التي عندها وقفت.
هذا، ولقد تمثل رهان المؤلف، في هذا الكتاب، على أنه لئن كان أجدادنا قد وجدوا أمام الفكر الغربي القديم -الفكر اليوناني- فما رهبوا لجلال قدره، وإنما ما فتئوا يعربونه الترعيب ويقربونه التقريب، تارة يسعفهم الحظ فتأتي العبارة مبينة مشفة، وتارة يتأبى عليهم فتأتي العبارة مشقة مشوشة، فإن المؤلف، وقد اعترف بما بذله الباحثون العرب المحدثون من جهود ترجمية وتوصيلية عظيمة، أراد المساهمة في هذا المجهود ترجمية وتوصيلية عظيمة، أراد المساهمة في هذا المجهود قدر المستطاع، و ذلك ببذل الطوق في "تقريب" أنظار مفكري الغرب في إحدى أهم المعضلات التي تواجه عرب اليوم -مسألة "الحداثة"- و"تبوئتها" البيئة العربية، بله "استشكالها" الاستشكال.
