وهذا الكتاب محاولة لاكتشاف الأسباب الجوهرية للتحولات الجارية في سوريا، ولتفسير هذه التحولات استناداً إلى منهج يمزج التاريخ بالسوسيولوجيا وبالثقافة والاقتصاد معاً، وهو يرصد كيف أن النخب السورية التي ورثت من العثمانيين والفرنسيين دولة شبه متصدعة، وحاولت أن تؤسس دولة متماسكة، ها هم أبناء هذه النخب اليوم يحوّلون سوريا إلى دولة محطمة، ولا سيما بعدما انقلب الريف على حزب الريفيين، أي حزب البعث، وكيف انجرف أعضاء حزب علماني إلى التدين، الأمر الذي غمر سوريا كلها بالأسلمة المتفاوتة في التطرف.
