لقد بدا لنا لوهلة أن العلم والإيديولوجيات قد حلت محل الدين، وعلى الرغم من ذلك لم يختلف الشعور الديني: لقد تغير.. لكن العلم لم يجب عن الأسئلة الكبيرة المهمة، وبرهنت الإيديولوجيات إنها محدودة. لفترة اختفى الدين التقليدي.. لكنه عاود الظهور بأثواب أكثر تقليدية وحاول بعض المتدينين لعب دور الوسيط بين الفرد والله، واغتالوا بذلك فسحة الصفاء التي يتمتع بها المؤمن في أثناء توجهه للخالق وكثر حراس الشفاه، مثلما كثرت الممنوعات والمحظورات، لنرى أن الكوابح الاجتماعية قد أعدمت فرصاً كثيرة كان بإمكانها أن توفر للإنسان العربي حيزاً مقبولاً من الطمأنينة الفردية والاجتماعية.. فتحولت بلدان العرب إلى نواد للممنوعات، لنرى أن المتشددين في هذا الطرف الديني أو ذلك الطرف العلماني قد أطبقوا بأصابعهم الغليظة على صدر المجتمع لتبدأ لعبة التصفيات بين التيارات والمذاهب والعقائد ولندخل مجتمعين هذه المرة في مدار الفراغ. هل يتحمل الدين مسؤولية الجرائم والمجازر التي تلف العالم؟ وهل يشكل الدين قوة بديلة عن التيارات والإيديولوجيات العلمانية؟ ما هو الموقف العلماني من الدين وهل تحول إلى أصولية جديدة؟..
